ToggleAt Prime Restoration LLC, we recently completed a mold mitigation project for a residential homeowner in Salt Lake City, UT. The problem began when a kinked tub spout caused a leak in the basement bathroom, which led to mold growth. The leak impacted the bathroom and the adjoining family room, damaging the drywall, flooring, casting, insulation, and part of the drywall under the bathtub tiles. Here’s how we approached the mold mitigation project in Salt Lake City, UT to ensure the problem was fully resolved.
Our Mold Mitigation Process After Kinked Tub Spout Caused the Damage
When it comes to mold mitigation, it’s important to follow a precise process to ensure all mold is removed and the space is fully dried to prevent further growth. Below are the key steps we followed to complete this project.
Containment and Safety
The first step was to set up containment barriers around the affected areas in both the bathroom and family room. This prevented mold spores from spreading to other parts of the house. We also wore full PPE (personal protective equipment) to protect ourselves and ensure safety throughout the project.
Negative Air Pressure
To further control the environment, we used a negative air machine to create negative pressure in the work zone. This made sure that any mold spores disturbed during the cleanup would be contained within the affected area, reducing the risk of contamination elsewhere in the home.
Demolition and Removal of Affected Materials
Once containment and safety were secured, we began the demolition and removal phase. This step was necessary to eliminate all mold-infested materials. Here’s how we carried it out:
- Removed damaged drywall and flooring: We carefully cut away all the affected drywall in the family room. The mold-infested flooring was also pulled up and removed.
- Detached the toilet: To fully access the mold-affected areas behind the bathtub, we detached the toilet from its fixtures, allowing us to remove any contaminated materials around the tub area.
- Removed moldy insulation: We found mold growth in the insulation behind the walls, so we removed and safely disposed of all affected insulation.
- Removed part of drywall behind tiles: Part of the drywall behind the bathtub tiles was also affected, so we removed that section to eliminate all traces of mold.
- Proper disposal of contaminated materials: All contaminated materials, including drywall, flooring, insulation, and tiles, were carefully bagged and disposed of, following local regulations.
Drying and Dehumidification
Once the damaged materials were removed, we used air movers, an air scrubber, and a dehumidifier to dry the area thoroughly. Mold grows in damp environments, so it was important to remove all excess moisture.
Final Cleaning and Preparation for Restoration
After drying the space, we completed a final cleaning of the area to remove any remaining mold spores. The room was then prepped and ready for restoration.
