History 

The canyon was originally inhabited by the Ute Tribe and was later settled by Mormon pioneers in the 1800s. The canyon was used as a route for westward expansion, and the first transcontinental railroad passed through the canyon in 1869. 

Today, the canyon is a popular recreational destination and is home to several campgrounds and hiking trails. The canyon is also popular for its fishing and is home to a variety of trout, including cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout.

There are a number of things to do in the canyon, including hiking, camping, fishing, and wildlife watching. 

  • Hiking: There are a number of hiking trails located in the canyon, ranging from easy to difficult. The most popular trail is the Spanish Fork River Trail, which follows the river for 3 miles and provides stunning views of the canyon. 
  • Camping: There are a number of campgrounds located in the canyon, including the Spanish Fork River Campground and the Upper Spanish Fork Campground. Both campgrounds offer RV hookups, and the Spanish Fork River Campground also offers cabins for rent. 
  • Fishing: The canyon is home to a variety of trout, including cutthroat, rainbow, and brown trout. The river is also stocked with trout by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Fishing is allowed year-round, and a valid Utah fishing license is required. 
  • Wildlife Watching: The canyon is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, and a variety of birds. The best time to see wildlife is in the early morning or evening, when they are most active.
